AMERICAN HISTORY

Lost Colony Found?

January 21, 2015 – Researchers are back in North Carolina to see if an obscure clue discovered on a period map may shed light on what happened to English settlers on Roanoke Island, the so-called Lost Colony.  The settlement was found deserted in 1590.  The fate of the colonists is one of the biggest mysteries of American history.

Representatives from the British Museum and the First Colony Foundation, a U.S.-based historical and archaeological research organization, first announced in 2012 that a map of Virginia and North Carolina from the 1580s provided evidence that the settlers may have relocated to the North Carolina mainland.  Two patches attached to the Virginea Pars map appear to correct a mistake that may indicate where the missing settlers traveled.
