AMERICAN HISTORY

Secret WWII Hero

February 27, 2015 – The story of a secret hero of World War II has now been told in a biography written by his son.  Captain Robert Trimble, a B-24 bomber pilot during the last years of the war, was sent to Poland and the Ukraine as the Nazis retreated and the Soviets advanced.  Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, regarded prisoners as burdens and threats and favored letting them die.  Armed with a diplomatic passport and $10,000 in bribe money, Trimble was able to smuggle more than a thousand people to safety, including 400 French women.

Trimble was honored by the French and American governments, but never told the story of his exploits until near the end of his life.  He died in 2009 at age 90.
