AMERICAN HISTORY

February 19, 2015 – Seventy years ago today the Battle of Iwo Jima began in the Pacific Theater of World War II.  It took more than a month in 1945 to take the island, 750 from the Japanese homeland.  Nearly 7,000 Americans gave their lives and 19,000 were wounded.  The photograph of Marines raising the flag atop Mount Suribachi became one of the most iconic images of the war.
