March 20, 2015 – Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary, once home to notorious gangster Al Capone, is believed by some to be one of the most haunted places in America and home to the souls of former inmates. Besides warehousing the prisoners in cramped cells, the guards often carried out severe punishments, including solitary confinement for all inmates, which some believe caused mental illness.
Built in 1829, the prison closed its doors in 1971, but reopened as a museum and Halloween attraction in 1996. Visitors and staff have reported eerie sightings and noises over the years.
