February 12, 2015 – A Tennessee couple paid 58 cents for a West Point sweater at Goodwill with the intention of reselling it at their vintage shop. Instead, Sean and Nikki McEvoy discovered they had made what a Dallas auction house calls “a once-in-a-lifetime find” – the coaching jacket once owned and worn by football legend Vince Lombardi.
The McEvoys bought the sweater last June while passing through West Asheville, North Carolina, on a road trip. They did not realize how valuable it was until last December when the couple watched a television documentary and saw the famous coach wearing a sweater identical to the one they had bought. They took a closer look at their garment and discovered a tag reading “Lombardi 46.” The sweater is expected to sell at auction for as much as $20,000.
