WWII Aircraft Carrier Found Largely Intact on Ocean Floor

April 18, 2015 – A World War II aircraft carrier has been found “amazingly intact” after 64 years on the ocean floor.  An undersea survey team, part of a government mission to locate historic shipwrecks, discovered the USS Independence 30 miles off the coast of San Francisco, California.

After the war, the ship sustained damage during atomic bomb testing in the Pacific in 1946, and the Navy scuttled her in 1951.
